Shoot was a joy.The man was a pleasure.There was the mammukka who waited for me until 3 pm without lunch so that I can join him after my shots for a home cooked lunch from his home.There was the mammukka who changed my perspective to listening,reading and watching movies.There was the mammukka who made me think on the screenplay more and more making it more engaging.There was the mammukka,a great film maker. We had so many meetings preshoot before Varsham.I started discovering the warmth in that person slowly as we started interacting very closely.He was not only that techy, stylish guy that we all know.That was just a periffery.Deep inside there was that wonderful human being with a great heart.a superb film maker,an amazing listener,the man with the best sense of music and screenplay.i can go on and on.The greatest thing about this living legend for me was that there still remains that simple,humble man in him despite being one of the biggest superstars of his times.Ĭouple of weeks before shoot he sent me a tamil short film.He asked me to see it for once,maybe i can get inspired.I saw it and wrote the Aamir holy water scene.:)The short film was nothing about it but that made me change that scene like that.Orginal scene ended where venu and nandini was in the balcony.Again he amazed me.A star of his stature watches tamil short films!!! I met Mammukka after passenger with Varsham script.It did not happen then as well.Unilke passenger I couldnt think of any other actor who can do justice to venu.So I decided to wait:)Īfter Punyalan Agarbathis I again felt the urge to make Varsham.I met Mammukka again with the reworked script.He had tears in his eyes more than once in between the narration.Thats how it started.

Overall, Varsham has the elements of a thought-provoking film, which lingers even after you exit the movie hall.I met Mammukka first as the superstar way back in 2006 on Palunku movie set to narrate Passenger.Passenger did not happen.Thats an old story by now. Sajitha Madhathil, Sunil Sugadha, Master Prajwal, Hareesh Peradi and T G Ravi have acted well. Mamta Mohandas’ character is lovable, but it does not leave her much space to emote. Asha Sarath’s powerful portrayal deserves a special mention. Though a shade of Pranchiyettan resurfaces at certain junctures courtesy the Thrissur-dialect businessmen image bestowed to both characters, one can’t fault the actor’s performance. Watching Mammootty in these moments purely as an artiste isn’t easy, though his expressions are the same and they have moved us numerous times before. He is still a smart financier with better motives. An unexpected tragedy leaves blemishes around and as the first half wraps up, audience see the lead characters recuperating slowly.įrom a crooked businessman, Venu becomes a humane personality, though his money-mindedness resurfaces in flashes. Parents with high expectations from kids, innocent neighbourhood comparisons, moneymaking priorities and kids with better sensibilities Varsham has a regular, unsurprising first half. The film starts with Venu –– an extraordinary ‘newsmaker’ businessman –– and how his family was just another normal family. There are also a few thought provoking sequences and reflections of certain personalities that are enacted with conviction by talented artistes. However, what makes Varsham great are its heart-warming moments and Mammootty’s performance. It's the tale of a rich dad who bundles up money for his kid’s future, while destiny has other plans. Review: The basic idea of Varsham is something that we have witnessed in our films for ages. Tragedy strikes as karma takes its course and Venu starts to see life in a new light. He has piled up all his money for his teenaged son’s future.

Story : Venu is an astute businessman who is willing to go to any extent to increase his bank balance.
